Once upon a time, at the edge of a wood in the turning of the year, a cream-coloured cat came walking down the leaf path. She didn't hurry. Heralds never do. She had come to show us something. Past the hay, two kids lay curled in a nest of straw, three weeks old and still half dreaming. Past the palisade gate, the smallest of them took his first brave steps into the wide leaf-world. On the fallen logs by the old tree, the young court gathered for council, and one shy face peeked out from behind the bark to see who had come. Deeper in, where the goldenrod grows tall, the Old One kept watch. Black-coated, horn-crowned, unhurried. Every fairytale has a guardian at the edge of the forest, and ours chews cud. Then the storm rolled over, and the sky drew not one rainbow but two. Fairytales were never really about magic. They were about the ordinary virtues dressed in enchanted clothes: the courage to step through the gate, the patience of the guardian, the trust of the little ones sleeping in the hay. The Stoics would have recognised every character. Living secundum naturam, according to nature, means seeing that the real world already holds all of this. You don't have to invent the wonder.
