Filmed during the album photoshoot in the Dominican Republic, he shares insights into his life, his connection to Latin America and some of his favourite places, while revealing the stories and ideas that shaped this deeply personal musical journey. ‘Mi Historia Americana – Sur’ is out now. The first part of Daniil Trifonov’s autobiographical project, ‘My American Story - North', explored the landscape of United States piano literature from the past century. With ‘Mi Historia Americana – Sur’, he continues the journey along the winding musical pathways of Latin America. Bringing together pieces celebrated within the region but often less familiar elsewhere, the album traces both Trifonov’s own journey of discovery and the rich history of Latin American pianistic tradition. The album features piano works by Gabriela Lena Frank, Ginastera, Guarnieri, Lecuona and Villa-Lobos, alongside Trifonov’s own tango. Two orchestral works with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra broaden the scope of the album: Ary Barroso’s popular Aquarela do Brasil and the world-premiere recording of Osvaldo Golijov’s vividly coloured Cuadros del Sur. Spanning Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Peru and Argentina, Trifonov creates a richly layered musical panorama. At the same time, the album gains a personal dimension through Trifonov’s close connection to the region, lending this musical journey of discovery a special significance.
