Royapettah is one of the older and culturally layered neighborhoods of Chennai, with a history that reflects the city’s transition from colonial Madras to a modern metropolis. Originally, Royapettah was part of the villages that lay outside the early British settlement of Fort St. George, which was established in 1640. As Madras expanded during the 18th and 19th centuries, Royapettah gradually became integrated into the growing urban fabric. During the colonial period, Royapettah gained importance due to its proximity to key administrative and commercial zones such as Triplicane and Mylapore. It also became home to institutions, schools, and religious centers serving diverse communities Hindu, Muslim, and Christian.
