Who was Melchizedek—and why does the Bible reveal so little about him? He appears suddenly in Genesis 14 as the mysterious King of Salem and priest of God Most High, blesses Abraham, receives a tenth—and then disappears from the story. Yet Melchizedek does not disappear from the Bible. Psalm 110 speaks of a priest “forever” according to the order of Melchizedek. Centuries later, the mysterious Dead Sea Scroll known as 11QMelchizedek presents him in an extraordinary heavenly role. Then Hebrews 7 uses Melchizedek to explain the eternal priesthood of Jesus. So who was he really? Was Melchizedek simply an ancient priest-king of Salem? Was he Shem, the son of Noah? An angelic or heavenly figure? Or was he a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ? In this biblical investigation, we separate what Genesis actually says from later Jewish and Christian interpretations, examining Genesis 14, Psalm 110, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Hebrews 7, ancient Salem, and the historical world surrounding Abraham. The deeper mystery may not be what the Bible tells us about Melchizedek—but what it leaves completely unexplained.
