For centuries, Portland has stood on ground that appears solid, stable, and permanent. But beneath the city, water-saturated layers of soil can behave very differently when powerful earthquake shaking begins.
When the Cascadia Subduction Zone finally breaks, the earthquake itself may be only the beginning. Powerful shaking could cause saturated ground to lose its strength and behave more like a liquid. Roads could buckle, foundations could shift, buried pipelines could fail, and critical infrastructure could be damaged as the ground beneath parts of the city changes beneath the surface.
But how does solid ground suddenly turn into something that behaves like liquid?
In this cinematic science documentary, we investigate soil liquefaction beneath Portland and follow the chain of events that could unfold during a major Cascadia megathrust earthquake—from intense ground shaking to soil failure and the cascading damage that could follow across Portland and the Pacific Northwest.
The Cascadia Subduction Zone is capable of producing a magnitude 9-class earthquake. The last great Cascadia earthquake occurred in 1700. Scientists know the fault will rupture again—but they cannot predict exactly when.
The danger isn't only the earthquake.
It may be the ground beneath the city.
Join The Science Guy as we explore the Cascadia Subduction Zone, Portland earthquake risk, soil liquefaction, saturated soils, earthquake damage, ground failure, infrastructure failures, and the hidden geological conditions beneath one of the Pacific Northwest's major cities.
When Cascadia breaks, the ground beneath Portland may not behave the way you expect.
