On 11 November 1975, David Smith, Official Secretary to the Governor-General, read a proclamation dissolving both houses of parliament. On the steps of Parliament House, Gough Whitlam responded with his now famous speech, ‘Well may we say, “God saved the Queen”, because nothing wtill save the Governor-General'.
