The Girls Aloud singer was famously axed from the show by Simon Cowell, but still appears in parts of the opening episode. The British star was replaced by former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, who was described as "not much more than a seat warmer" by the New York Times. The review said, "Cheryl just kind of disappears mid show, without much explanation, and suddenly Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls is in her chair. It''s a downgrade." The Los Angeles Times also came to Cole''s defence saying that Cheryl was "much more interesting than Scherzinger." The newspaper also called Cole''s broad Newcastle accent "fabulous." The Chicago Tribune wrote, "she seemed perfectly at ease with the other judges - and perfectly easy to understand." Cowell said in a recent interview with Piers Morgan that he sacked Cole from the program because she looked "a bit bewildered" during filming. "I took the view along with a few other people that she would be more comfortable back in the UK," he told Morgan. "The X Factor" premiered Wednesday night (21SEP11) on Fox in the U.S. Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter:   / ap_archive   Facebook:   / aparchives    Instagram:   / apnews   You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
