Which stretch of the desert Silk Road was the most dangerous, and for whom? This long history keeps a five column ledger (the land, the body, the people on the road, the people far away, and the debt) and follows the road from the last wall of China to the plateau of Persia.
The short answer, as far as the surviving evidence allows: the high mountain passes were the best attested place to die in a single bad week, ruin came from a failing protector combined with a due debt, and the road was hardest on travelers with the fewest connections. The video also explains what the sources cannot tell us.
Scope: this covers the desert road only. It does not rank the northern steppe road or the sea routes.
