Today we're looking at their second album, Broken Machine, released in September 2017. There was a great deal of anticipation surrounding this record, and in my opinion it successfully builds on everything that made the debut so enjoyable while developing the band's sound. I Was Just a Kid A powerful, heavier opener about growing up too quickly. Adam praises its energy, outstanding riff and excellent pacing, calling it an even stronger opener than 'Excuse Me'. Amsterdam The lead single, representing escape from a repetitive life. Adam highlights its infectious energy, excellent chorus and Connor Mason's vocal performance. Sorry An emotional ballad about accepting responsibility for a failed relationship, featuring one of the album's strongest choruses. Broken Machine The experimental title track incorporating hip-hop influences. Although not a personal favourite, Adam appreciates its ambition and how it foreshadows the band's later sound. Live Like Animals A groove-driven track tackling corporate greed, media manipulation and loss of humanity. One of the album's most enjoyable surprises. Soda One of Adam's favourite songs, exploring depression and anxiety with an exceptional vocal performance. I'm Not Made by Design A heavy, dynamic song rejecting organised religion and showcasing outstanding musicianship. Particles A deeply personal song dealing with touring, addiction and strained relationships. One of the album's emotional highlights. Get Better Built from studio improvisation, this explores depression and recovery. Adam considers it the weakest track, although still a good song. Hell, Yeah Adam's favourite song on the album, admired for its haunting atmosphere and extraordinary vocal performance. Afterlife A reflective closer questioning the idea of an afterlife. Adam enjoys its themes but wishes it ended with greater impact. Reset Me (Bonus Track) An energetic song that Adam believes deserved a place on the standard album. Number 13 (Bonus Track) A strong closing bonus track exploring a destructive relationship with plenty of energy and memorable hooks. Artwork Adam praises the album artwork for presenting beauty through visible imperfections, reinforcing the themes explored throughout the record. Final Verdict Adam rates Broken Machine alongside the band's debut. While not every experiment succeeds, the album confidently expands Nothing But Thieves' sound and avoids any second-album slump. It remains one of the band's strongest releases and sets up the following EP perfectly.
