Season 3 · Episode 4.
Something keeps going wrong on your team, a few people each give you a different reason, and one of them sounds like something you’ve seen before. You back that reason, and it becomes the plan. “Trust your gut” is real advice: when the same situations come around again and again, and you’ve had years to learn them, a gut feeling can be well trained. On a problem several people see differently, though, most of the time each person is right about one part of it and takes that part for the whole.
In this episode I tell the story of late customer orders that three leads explain three ways, and how I work a decision out myself: I’m autistic, and I have alexithymia, which means I can tell I’m feeling something but often not what, so I go through each person’s reasons to find what they have in common, now with Claude to test my reasoning. Then I talk through three questions: ask each person what they think is causing the problem and why, and what it puts at risk in their work, then ask yourself what all of their reasons have in common. I try them on a hotel’s check-in waits and a mixer factory’s returns, and the episode closes on the Operating Brief and a Monday test for your next decision that involves more than one team.
Episode 4 of Where Decisions Break (the Decision Charter and the AI Cognitive Strategy Matrix).
