DR DOS, by Caldera's count, held about 6% of the world's PC operating system market by 1990, and it was the one real rival to MS-DOS. This is how the Digital Research DOS vanished from new PCs, and what a judge later read in Microsoft email.
DR DOS reached PC makers in May 1988 and stores in 1990, about a year ahead of MS-DOS 5.0, at a list price of $199. Novell bought Digital Research in July 1991. Then a December 1991 beta of Windows 3.1, sent to more than 12,000 test sites, showed a "Non-fatal error" on PCs running DR DOS. Novell gave up on DOS in 1994.
In this documentary:
1. How per processor licences made PC makers pay Microsoft for every machine
2. Why Digital Research was kept out of the Windows 3.1 beta
3. What Andrew Schulman found inside the encrypted AARD code
4. Why Caldera bought DR DOS and sued Microsoft the same day
5. How the $280 million settlement stayed secret for years
If you ever went back to MS-DOS because it seemed safer with Windows, share what you remember below.
What remains: DR DOS later ran kiosks and cash machines.
