Why you don't want to live on the US-Canada border: the border towns the line cuts off, and how life there can change overnight. Point Roberts, WA gets its drinking water from Canada, and its kids cross the border four times a day just to go to school.
We visit four US-Canada border towns: Point Roberts, an American town you can only drive to through Canada; Derby Line and the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, where the books sit in Canada and the front door sits in America; the Northwest Angle in Minnesota; and Campobello Island, Canada, whose only bridge goes to Maine.
In 2020 the border closed and Point Roberts lost almost everything. In 2025 nobody closed anything, the gates were wide open, and the cars still did not come back.
Do you live near the border? Tell us your town in the comments. And should Point Roberts become Canadian?
