Based on the symptoms I was experiencing with the current engine, I decided to swap it for a much newer Kohler Courage V-Twin I had laying around as a parts engine. Combining the good parts from both engines wasn't too bad, but dealing with sheared mounting bolts in the sump was very difficult.
