Late at night on September 20, 199X, a Special Air Service unit, or S.A.T., from an unnamed country launched a top-secret infiltration and destruction mission known as Operation Tiger.
Their objective was to investigate and destroy a vehicle carrying chemical weapons of unknown origin. Seven elite soldiers were dropped from a helicopter approximately 15 km south of Point D, an important supply route in the fictional Country X.
However, the unit encountered far more military installations than intelligence reports had indicated, along with enemy soldiers equipped with modern weapons.
At 4:32 a.m. on September 23, 199X, all contact with the seven S.A.T. soldiers was lost.
In Operation Tiger, the player uses a mounted machine gun built into the dedicated arcade cabinet and fights through six stages using the standard machine gun and grenades.
The campaign consists of six stages, taking the players through locations such as enemy military installations, jungle terrain, a prisoner camp or headquarters complex, supply routes, ruined urban areas, and the final escape operation.
Some sections introduce branching route choices, allowing the mission to follow different paths before eventually returning to the main objective.
The final portion of the operation centers on reaching an airfield and escaping hostile territory, culminating in a battle against an enemy combat helicopter.
The player's main weapon is a submachine gun with a limited magazine capacity of 20 rounds. Ammunition is not unlimited and must be replenished by shooting magazine pickups that appear during combat.
Players also carry a limited supply of grenades and rockets. These heavier weapons are particularly useful against armored targets such as tanks, helicopters, and other military vehicles, which cannot always be efficiently destroyed with ordinary gunfire.
Additional grenade and rocket ammunition can be obtained by shooting the corresponding pickups as they appear.
A laser-pointer power-up can occasionally be collected, providing a visible aiming aid.
The player has a life gauge that decreases when hit by enemy attacks. Different weapons and enemy attacks can inflict different amounts of damage.
Health can be restored by shooting canteens or drink items found throughout the stages.
Friendly personnel and hostages also appear during the mission. The player must avoid shooting them and, in certain situations, protect or assist them. Harming an ally or failing to provide assistance can reduce the player's life gauge.
The mission includes the rescue of five hostages, tying the shooting action directly into the game's larger rescue-and-extraction objective.
Enemy forces consist of infantry as well as heavier military equipment, including armored vehicles and helicopters. Infantry can often be struck multiple times, with repeated hits providing additional scoring opportunities.
Combat is divided into a series of encounters, and players generally have to eliminate the required enemies before the camera advances to the next area. This gives the game a rhythm similar to the earlier Operation Wolf titles while presenting the action with fully polygonal 3D graphics.
