Sydney is one of the world’s most famous harbour cities — so why does it feel so different after 8PM? In the first episode of SYDNEY AFTER DARK, I walk from Circular Quay through The Rocks towards Barangaroo, starting with the huge contrast between Sydney by day and Sydney after dark. Compared with places like Tokyo and Hong Kong, Sydney’s waterfront can become surprisingly calm very early in the evening. Is it just the local lifestyle — or is Sydney simply built to work differently after dark? Along the way, I look at the city’s night-time economy, the way people move through Sydney, and whether this quieter atmosphere is really a weakness at all. Because the more I walked, the more I started to enjoy it. But there’s another side to Sydney’s night-time story. And one place used to represent almost the complete opposite of what you see here tonight: Kings Cross. And in the next episode of Sydney After Dark, we’re heading there to find out what changed.
