Ian McGeechan's 1974 British & Irish Lions tour remains one of rugby's greatest stories. Through five legendary teammates — Phil Bennett, Willie John McBride, JPR Williams, Andy Irvine and Gareth Edwards — this documentary explores the different kinds of greatness McGeechan witnessed inside the unbeaten Lions side.
The 1974 Lions toured South Africa and finished unbeaten across 22 matches, winning 21 and drawing the final Test 13–13 at Ellis Park. The first three Tests secured a 3–0 series victory over the Springboks.
Phil Bennett brought imagination. Willie John McBride embodied leadership. JPR Williams represented trust and reliability. Andy Irvine produced one of the defining moments of the final Test when his late penalty preserved the unbeaten record. And Gareth Edwards occupied a different place altogether in McGeechan's personal estimation.
McGeechan has described Edwards as his favourite player of all time and called him “the master” and “The Greatest.”
This is the story of the 1974 Lions through the players who helped make that extraordinary tour possible.
