The September FOMC minutes explain why most participants then thought another rate increase would probably be appropriate by year end—and why that was a conditional view, not a promise. We follow the pressure through an imaginary bakery, small-business lending, energy bills, AI investment, and the later inflation and jobs reports that complicate the next decision. Reporting cutoff: October 7, 2026, 2:20 p.m. Eastern. The minutes were released October 7 and describe the September 15–16 meeting. They are NOT a new rate decision. Another increase was already suggested by September’s published projections. Staff and participant projections remain conditional. The $500,000 bakery loan is hypothetical. A quarter-percentage-point increase adds $1,250 of annual simple interest only under a constant balance and full pass-through, excluding principal repayment and fees. It is not a lender quote. August PCE inflation was published September 30 with methodology changes; its reference period predates the September hike. The October 2 jobs report was also unavailable at the September meeting. We make no claim about a market-price reaction to today’s minutes. Educational content, not personalized investment advice. Original Money Maproom writing and illustrations.
