In 1496, painters crawled on their bellies over earth, just under a ceiling beneath Rome. They called it a grotto: a cave. It was no cave. It was Nero's palace, the Golden House, in the heart of Rome; a park now lies on top. Why is a palace underground?
The biographer Suetonius described it: a statue a hundred and twenty feet tall, a lake like a sea, a round dining hall turning day and night, like the heavens. After Nero, the next emperors raised the Colosseum where his lake was, finished by 80. A court poet cheered: Rome is given back to itself.
In 104, fire wrecked the palace. Builders cut down its upper floor and filled the rooms below with earth, the foundation for Trajan's baths, opened in 109. The fill that buried the palace also sealed it: no sunlight, no rain, no looters reached the ceilings below for nearly fourteen hundred years. Their copied patterns took the grotto's name: grotesque.
Opening the rooms let damp in; park soil and rain press on the vaults, and in 2010 part of one gave way. In 2009, excavators on the Palatine Hill found a round foundation sixteen metres wide and read it as Suetonius's turning dining hall. Others still dispute it. The dining hall turns only on paper.
On Paper is about the gap between what was written down and what stood.

Disclosure: the 1496 scene is an illustration after that poem (ILLUSTRATION · 1496); the palace of 68 and the Colosseum of 80 are a reconstruction over today's photos (ONE RECONSTRUCTION); the section and 3D drawings are diagrams. Reading the sixteen-metre foundation as the dining hall is disputed. Nothing is exaggerated.
