Mount Etna erupts at sunrise on August 11, 2026, lighting up the sky over Sicily as lava and ash continue from one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
Official updates from INGV’s Etna Observatory reported that a new eruptive vent opened overnight in the Valle del Bove near Monte Simone, at an estimated elevation of about 1,900 meters. Etna was already in an intense eruptive phase, with lava flows active from vents around 2,750 m and 2,360 m, while strong explosive activity continued at Voragine crater.
INGV reported abundant ash emissions from Voragine, with ash dispersing toward the south and south-southeast. Volcanic tremor remained high, and Etna’s aviation color code was kept at RED due to the ongoing ash hazard and explosive activity.
This sunrise view captures Etna during a dramatic and evolving eruption, with glowing lava, summit explosions, ash emissions, and the first light of day over eastern Sicily.
