Baramulla: Intern doctors at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla have expressed happiness following the Jammu and Kashmir Government’s decision to increase the monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs).
According to Government Order No. 747-JK HME of 2026, dated October 21, 2026, the monthly stipend of intern doctors has been increased from ₹12,300 to ₹25,000. The revised stipend will be effective from October 1, 2026.
It is pertinent to mention that around two months ago, intern doctors from GMC Baramulla and other medical colleges across Jammu and Kashmir staged protests demanding an increase in their monthly stipend. The interns also observed a strike for nearly 13 days, raising their concerns and pressing the government to address their long-pending demand.
During the protests, Health Minister Sakina Itoo had assured the intern doctors that appropriate action would be taken on their genuine demands. The doctors had subsequently given the government approximately two months to fulfil its assurance.
Following the issuance of the order, intern doctors at GMC Baramulla expressed their gratitude to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Health Minister Sakina Itoo. They said the government’s decision had fulfilled their long-standing demand and would provide them with much-needed financial relief.
The intern doctors also extended special thanks to the media for supporting them throughout the agitation and highlighting their demands. They said the media had played an important role in conveying their concerns to the government and the concerned authorities.
The increase in the monthly stipend is being viewed as a significant relief for intern doctors, who had been seeking a revision of their stipend for a long time.
