A hidden compartment behind a wooden ceiling helped conceal a stockpile of illegal firecrackers worth approximately 50 lakh in Delhi’s Jama Masjid area. During a detailed search, Delhi Police discovered a 4×4-foot sliding panel built into the wooden ceiling, behind which nearly 590 kilograms of firecrackers had been stored. The police raided the premises and arrested two men, identified as Janki Das and Abhik Das.
The raid was conducted on October 8 by the Vigilance Branch of Delhi Police’s Central District at SS & Sons, a shop located in Bazar Guliyan, Jama Masjid, Central Delhi. Acting on specific intelligence about the illegal storage of firecrackers ahead of the festive season, the police team carried out a surprise inspection of the premises.
Initially, the shop appeared largely empty from the ground level, with no obvious sign of a large firecracker stockpile. Investigators also noticed a plastic sack covering the shop’s signboard. However, the team continued searching the premises instead of relying on what was visible at first glance.
During the inspection, the officers noticed a suspicious section in the wooden ceiling. A closer examination revealed a 4×4-foot sliding panel that provided access to a concealed upper compartment. When the panel was opened, the police discovered a hidden storage space containing different varieties of firecrackers.
The concealed compartment held approximately 590 kilograms of illegal firecrackers valued at around ₹50 lakh, according to the police. The recovery revealed how a substantial quantity of firecrackers had been stored out of ordinary view inside the shop.
The police arrested both Janki Das and Abhik Das at the spot. According to officials, the two accused are residents of Majlis Park, Adarsh Nagar, Delhi.
During questioning, the accused allegedly told investigators that the firecrackers had been supplied by another person. Police are now working to identify the alleged supplier and establish where the consignment originated, who was supposed to receive it, and whether other individuals were involved in the operation.
A case has been registered at Jama Masjid Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Explosives Act. Further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and identify other people allegedly connected to the illegal storage of firecrackers.
The seizure comes ahead of the festive season, when authorities intensify action against the illegal storage and sale of firecrackers in Delhi.
