The other option is your bonsai I simply struggling. This can happen for many reasons. Some obvious and some less than obvious. On the obvious end you have the reality of bonsai. Small trees in small pots, limited water availability, and finite resources to resolve problems. That situation means a small accident, oversight or problem escalates quickly. Possibly to a dead bonsai. The first thing to know is your bonsai dead. A small scratch into the bark should show green living cambium. If not dig a bit deeper. If still nothing your tree is dead at that point. Try again lower down towards the nebari. The alternative is to feel for a temperature difference. Flowing sap will feel a different temperature than dead wood. Typically slightly cooler but this varies by local conditions. Next is the soil. Does it smell? It should. However if it smells sour or similar it is bad. If you still have no answer you start to diagnose. Drainage, light, pests, nutrition, temperature, humidity, wire, damage. The list goes on.
