Louis XVI’s children entered the Temple prison together after the French monarchy fell. After their father was executed, their futures split: seven-year-old Louis-Charles became a powerless royalist symbol, while Marie-Thérèse became the family’s last surviving child.
Louis-Charles, called Louis XVII by royalists, was separated from his mother, used in accusations against Marie Antoinette, and left in worsening isolation and illness. He died in the Temple in 1795 at just ten years old, then disappeared into an uncertain common grave.
His sister Marie-Thérèse survived prison, crossed into exile in a diplomatic exchange, returned during the Bourbon Restoration, and was forced from France again after the Revolution of 1830. Her story carried her from Versailles to the Temple, Vienna, restored Paris, and a final Bourbon exile.
This documentary follows the two children through captivity, separation, disease, political symbolism, restoration, and loss. It also examines the memoir Marie-Thérèse left behind, the preserved heart attributed to Louis-Charles, and why neither child ultimately left descendants.
