Skiing in Hochgurgl, Austria. Our trip from Miami to Solden, Austria. Where to stay, where to ski. Guide to skiing vocation. Our story is simple. We started skiing in the mid-1980s, right after we got married, on the glamorous, wind-scoured slopes of upstate New York. It was cold, icy, and mildly terrifying—and we were hooked. Skiing became part of our DNA. We skied through pregnancy (yes, we know), through raising kids, and through countless Vermont winters, with Stratton Mountain, Vermont basically serving as our winter address. Then life happened. We moved to Florida, where the closest thing to a ski slope is an air-conditioned supermarket aisle. Skiing didn’t fade away—it vanished. For over twenty years. During our absence, an entire ski civilization rose and fell. People were born, learned to ski, mastered it, got bored, retired, and bought e-bikes. Which officially makes us dinosaurs. But in 2025, the dinosaurs returned. Switzerland. Austria. First turns back—and shockingly, the skis still worked and so did we (after a warm-up… and maybe another warm-up). Now in our 60s, we’re still skiing. Not fast. Not fearless. Helmets buckled, lunch reservations planned early. But grateful—grateful for the mountains, for bodies that mostly cooperate, and for the joy of rediscovering something we loved. And here’s one more dream: that one day our grandchildren will clip into skis too. That they’ll feel the same nerves at the top, the same grin on the way down, and maybe—just maybe—ski alongside a couple of very happy, slightly creaky dinosaurs. https://www.stratton.com/ @Solden, @skiing, @skiing in Austria, @Austria, @holidays in Austria, @from Miami to Austria, @SÖLDEN, @Hochgurgl
