Day 20 – Cortez to Telluride | 70 Miles of Relentless Climbing into the Rocky Mountains The Rocky Mountains truly begin to make their presence felt. Today's ride from Cortez to Telluride was 70 tough miles with around 6,000 ft of climbing, reaching an elevation of over 10,200 ft. The climbing seemed never-ending, and just when I thought the hardest part was over, the weather turned. Heavy rain, thunder and freezing temperatures made the long descent both challenging and dangerous. After a gruelling day, I finished by camping in the forest, hoping for a dry night before taking on another day in the Rockies.
