Draft Like a Designer - Section 6: Working with Layers Part 2

Take your AutoCAD layer skills to the next level! In Working with Layers – Part 2, we’ll move beyond assigning objects to layers and explore some of the tools that give you greater control over what you see, how your linework looks, and how your drawings print. You’ll learn how to: ✦ FREEZE LAYERS – Hide layers from your drawing and understand how freezing differs from simply turning a layer off ✦ ISOLATE LAYERS – Temporarily display only the layers you need so you can focus on specific parts of your drawing ✦ LINETYPE SCALE – Adjust the appearance and spacing of dashed and other non-continuous linetypes ✦ OBJECT OVERRIDES – Override an individual object’s color, linetype, or lineweight using the Properties controls on the Home tab ✦ BYLAYER vs. OVERRIDES – Understand when objects should follow their assigned layer properties and when an individual override may be useful ✦ PSLTSCALE – Control how linetypes display consistently in Paper Space viewports at different drawing scales ✦ PLOT PREVIEW – Check your drawing before printing to make sure your colors, lineweights, linetypes, and other properties are displaying correctly Layers do much more than organize your drawing—they give you control over how information is displayed and communicated. As your AutoCAD drawings become more complex, knowing how to temporarily hide information, isolate what you're working on, and control the appearance of individual objects becomes incredibly useful. We’ll also tackle one of those classic AutoCAD mysteries: “Why does my dashed line look solid?!” 😆 Understanding linetype scale and PSLTSCALE will help you get those dashed, hidden, and specialty lines looking the way they're supposed to—both on screen and on the printed sheet. And before you call a drawing finished, remember: always check your Plot Preview! What you see while drafting isn't necessarily what you're going to get on paper. By the end of this tutorial, you'll have several more tools in your AutoCAD toolbox for creating drawings that are organized, readable, controlled, and ready to print professionally.
