Colombia is facing a growing economic crisis as government debt rises, inflation remains stubbornly high and the country explores a potential $20 billion IMF rescue package.
One of Latin America's largest economies is facing a serious financial challenge. Colombia's budget deficit could reach 9.4% of GDP in 2027, while interest rates are at 12.25% and the government is preparing spending cuts potentially worth $14 billion.
In this video, I examine what's going wrong with Colombia's economy, why government borrowing costs are becoming a major concern, and whether the International Monetary Fund could provide a financial lifeline.
I also look at Colombia's economic background, including its oil, coal and coffee exports, its history of drug cartels, the Colombian peso and the wider implications for Latin America.
Colombia is not bankrupt, and no IMF bailout has been agreed. But can the government restore confidence and bring its finances under control before the situation becomes considerably worse?
