Empty space is nothing. Or is it? Take a box, pump out every atom, block every ray of light, cool it to the coldest temperature the universe allows, and physics says it still isn't empty. In this video, you'll discover why the quantum vacuum is one of the strangest and best-tested ideas in quantum physics. Starting from the uncertainty principle, we build up the picture of quantum fields and zero-point energy. Then we follow the evidence: the Lamb shift measured in 1947, the Casimir effect predicted in 1948 and measured in 1997, and even the tiny sensors inside phones and cars. Finally, we reach the paradox: the straightforward calculation of vacuum energy disagrees with the measured strength of dark energy by a factor often quoted as 10 to the power of 120, known as the cosmological constant problem. Important note: the Lamb shift and the Casimir effect are experimentally confirmed. Whether dark energy is truly the energy of the vacuum, and how to resolve that enormous mismatch, are still open questions in physics. If this made you look at empty space differently, like the video, share your thoughts in the comments, and subscribe to Sir Roger Explains for more quantum mechanics, cosmology, and physics explained simply. #QuantumPhysics #QuantumMechanics #PhysicsExplained #Cosmology #DarkEnergy #Universe #Physics
