A Village Prayer For Rain
On the evening of 16th June 2026, the people of Culvem Village came together in a remarkable display of faith, tradition, and community spirit to pray for the much-awaited monsoon rains.
Young and old alike gathered in large numbers, walking through the village while singing the traditional East Indian rain-invocation hymn “Sant Anton Khandavar, Paani Par Bandavar.” As voices echoed through the village lanes and the rhythmic sound of stones being struck together filled the night air, the entire atmosphere transformed into something truly sacred and unforgettable.
For many, this was more than just a procession—it was a journey back in time. Elders were reminded of cherished childhood memories, while younger generations experienced a beautiful tradition that has been passed down through centuries. The enthusiasm, devotion, and joy seen on every face reflected a community reconnecting with its roots and reliving a treasured part of its cultural heritage.
This ancient East Indian custom dates back generations. Whenever rains were delayed, villagers would walk in prayerful procession through their gaothans, carrying stones and striking them together to create a distinctive rhythmic sound while invoking God's blessings for abundant rainfall. The procession traditionally stops at Holy Crosses throughout the village, offering prayers for rain, protection, and prosperity. In some places, prayers are also offered before the statue of St. Anthony, seeking his intercession.
Holy Crosses hold a special place in East Indian history. Centuries ago, during times of plague and hardship, crosses were erected at village entrances and important locations throughout Bombay as symbols of faith, protection, and hope. Since then, they have remained an integral part of East Indian spiritual life and communal identity.
As Culvem united in prayer beneath the night sky, the event became a powerful reminder that traditions are not merely memories of the past—they are living legacies that continue to bring communities together.
May this beautiful custom continue for generations to come, keeping alive the faith, culture, and unity of our ancestors.
