They Became The Hunted by Savage Wolf
Lyrics:
[INTRO]
Steel upon the quiet sea,
The rising sun, the iron fleet.
Unbroken line, untouchable pride —
The Kido Butai cuts the tide.
They set the trap, they hold their breath,
Marching out to deal the death.
A perfect storm, a chosen prey —
Nothing stands in their way.
[VERSE 1]
Out of the spray the iron birds rise,
Marine‑born bombers claw the skies.
B‑26s, B‑17s in the line,
Flying blind through screaming iron.
No hits landed, the torpedoes wide —
Scattered stars against the tide.
They didn’t break the armor wall,
They only came to watch us fall.
Again they come, again they bleed —
A desperate, sacrificial breed.
[PRE‑CHORUS]
Turn, turn, turn — evade the fire!
Zeros screaming down the wire!
Flight decks choked with fueled planes,
Commanders howling out their names!
The tempo breaks, the rhythm dies
As wave on wave defies the skies.
[CHORUS]
THEY CAME TO HUNT!
THEY BECAME THE HUNTED!
The trap snaps shut — the steel is blinded!
From predator to sudden prey,
The hunted wash the dark away!
In the smoke and in the flame,
History remembers the name.
[VERSE 2]
VT‑8, VT‑6, VT‑3 —
Flying slow across the sea.
Obsolete iron, no wings to shield,
Walking straight into the killing field.
Zeroes dive from the upper blue,
Tearing the Devastators through and through.
They knew the cost, they held the line,
Falling down into the brine.
They didn’t win, they didn’t land —
They bought the time with a blood‑red hand.
[PRE‑CHORUS]
Fighters dragged low to the white‑capped waves,
Digging their own impatient graves.
Decks full of terror — bombs and fuel —
Caught inside a burning duel.
A sudden stillness chills the air…
Look up, look up — and wild despair.
[CHORUS]
THEY CAME TO HUNT!
THEY BECAME THE HUNTED!
The trap snaps shut — the steel is blinded!
From predator to sudden prey,
The hunted wash the dark away!
In the smoke and in the flame,
History remembers the name.
[GUITAR SOLO]
[BRIDGE]
Five… minutes…
To change the world.
Out of the sun the angels hurled —
Wings folding in a burning dive,
Point‑blank fury keeping fate alive.
Three carriers burn as the iron unfurls,
Commanders stunned, the order swirls.
No one counted up the cost —
The ocean lit with fire lost.
Ancient empires start to pyre,
History forged in rising fire.
[FINAL CHORUS]
THEY CAME TO HUNT!
THEY BECAME THE HUNTED!
The trap snaps shut — the steel is blinded!
From predator to sudden prey,
The hunted wash the dark away!
In the smoke and in the flame,
History remembers the name.
[OUTRO]
Smoke drifting slow across the gray,
Empty seats at the close of day.
Names that won’t be spoken again,
Lost forever in the wind and rain.
Victory is built on bones
And silent men and broken stones.
The hunters fell.
The shadows remain.
Additional Info:
Savage Wolf is a fictional heavy metal band performing AI Music. Its members are:
Jake Volkov; Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Acoustic Guitar
Zack Ulfric; Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals
Tommy Lowell; Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals
Erik Varg; Drums, Backing Vocals
The last names of the band members in Savage Wolf all relate to the word "wolf" across different languages:
Volkov: Russian and Slavic name meaning "wolf"
Lowell: English and Anglo-Norman French origins, also meaning "wolf".
Varg: A Swedish word directly meaning "wolf".
Ulfric: A Germanic personal name meaning "wolf power" or "wolf ruler".
This consistent theme reinforces the "Wolf" in the band's name, "Savage Wolf."
They Became The Hunted is a song by Savage Wolf covering the pivotal moments of the Battle of Midway. The song follows the Japanese carrier strike force, the Kido Butai, as it attempts to lure the American carriers into a trap, only to have the element of surprise turned against it.
The lyrics focus on how repeated and largely uncoordinated attacks from Midway and the American torpedo squadrons kept the Japanese fleet on the defensive and unable to launch a major strike of its own after the initial attack on Midway. While these attacks achieved little direct success and suffered devastating losses, the sacrifice of the Devastator squadrons created the opportunity for the American dive bombers from Enterprise and Yorktown to strike.
With Japanese fighter cover drawn away by the torpedo attacks and fighter escorts, American SBD Dauntless dive bombers arrived overhead and, within roughly five minutes, three of the four Japanese fleet carriers were set ablaze, inspiring the line "Five minutes to change the world."
The song closes by reflecting on the heavy cost of victory, the surviving aviators mourning fallen comrades, and the reality that despite Midway's significance, more than three years of war still remained. Although not covered directly in the song, the fourth Japanese carrier, Hiryu, was later sunk, and the battle-damaged Yorktown, which had returned to action after emergency repairs completed in less than 72 hours, was eventually lost to a Japanese submarine.
