Thierry Masci is one of the outstanding figures in the history of world karate — a fighter whose career embodies a rare combination of technical excellence, mental discipline and real-world professional experience. A two-time World Champion in individual kumite, winning the -70 kg title in Sydney in 1986 and Cairo in 1988, Masci established himself among the elite fighters of his generation on the international stage. His legacy goes beyond medals and championships. His karate reflects the discipline, precision and aesthetic principles of traditional Shotokan, combined with the explosive timing and tactical intelligence required at the highest level of combat. Beyond the competition tatami, his experience as a police officer and member of the GIPN, a specialised French police intervention unit, adds another dimension to his martial journey. A world champion. A Shotokan fighter. A tiger on the tatami. This is a tribute to Thierry Masci and his place in the history of world kumite. About this fight This footage shows Thierry Masci in action at the 1987 World Cup in Budapest, Hungary, during the bronze medal bout against Hungarian fighter Sándor Baranyai — a glimpse of the intensity, precision and fighting spirit that defined elite Shotokan kumite in that era.
