Demonstrated on my 2002 Acura TL-S, I will be showing you how to diagnose, remove, rebuild, and reinstall the shock absorbers in your car. ALWAYS REPLACE SHOCKS IN PAIRS, PREFERABLY ALL 4 AT THE SAME TIME! These shock absorbers may also be referenced as MacPherson struts, dampers, or in general the suspension for your car. Some signs you can easily look for in worn-out shocks include rust, oil leaks, clunking over bumps, and a cloudy/bouncy ride. Some other signs which are harder to diagnose include uneven tire wear, vibration in the steering wheel, excessive body roll during braking, accelerating, and turning, and longer braking distances. The shocks on my car were very rusty and also clunky over larger bumps.
When replacing your shocks, you have 3 main options: have a dealership/shop rebuild them for you, you can install new pre-assembled "quick struts", or you can rebuild them yourself. I would highly recommend putting Genuine Honda OEM struts in your car as those are very high quality and lasted 309,000 miles on my car, and also because aftermarket struts tend to be cheaply made, offer a poor quality ride, and don't last as long.
