How do we interpret the natural water content of a fine-grained soil relative to its Atterberg limits? This lesson derives and explains four important soil-consistency indices: liquidity index, consistency index, flow index, and toughness index.
The video develops each formula from a visual reference scale, proves the identity IC + IL = 1, interprets values outside the usual zero-to-one range, derives the flow index from the Casagrande flow curve, and solves one internally checked numerical example. It also explains what these empirical indices can—and cannot—tell us about field behavior and soil strength.
Topics covered:
Plasticity index as the normalizing range
Liquidity index and consistency index derivations
Interpretation of IL below zero and above one
Why shrinkage limit is still needed below the plastic limit
Flow index from water content versus log10(blow count)
Why flow index is taken as a positive slope magnitude
Toughness index and its engineering limitations
Complete numerical example with three independent checks
This is Video 6 in the Atterberg Limits and Soil Index Properties series. The next lesson explains the Casagrande plasticity chart, A-line, U-line, and soil groups.
