Intangible heritage Quanzhou Beiguan spread to Quangang from Jianghuai via sea routes in the Qing Dynasty, known as “The Emperor’s Melody”. Gentle Nanyin contrasts with vigorous Beiguan. Southern silk-bamboo encounters northern drum music, blending Jianghuai folk tunes, Jiangnan silk-bamboo and Minnan elegance. It consists of vocal Qu and instrumental Pu. Vocal pieces come with gongs and drums; instrumental works feature ensemble performance. Played in street processions, it carries millennia-old Tang-style harmonies born from cultural exchanges on the Maritime Silk Road.
