This project inspired Tastic to develop Contra 80s further. Since then, over 20,000 lines of code have been added to hires.txt, and very little of the original 2021 work remains. Most of the code was written manually, with AI used to assist with a few specific features, mainly parallax background scrolling and animations using the frameRange functions. ChatGPT and Gemini were also used to create most of the HD replacement graphics for the backgrounds and character sprites. Contra 80s is an HD graphics upgrade that reimagines Contra as an action-packed ’80s thrill ride. Play as Dutch from Predator or Rambo as you battle through worlds inspired by iconic action, sci-fi, and horror films, including Predator, Aliens, The Terminator, The Thing, and The Empire Strikes Back. With the 40th anniversaries of both Aliens and Predator upon us, the time feels right to unleash this hard-hitting ’80s update to the NES classic. So lock & load, and remember… if it bleeds, … Mesen is a free Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator that supports HD Packs, fan-made modifications that replace a game’s original 8-bit graphics with high-definition textures, custom sprites, and enhanced audio in real time. This HD Pack runs at 2× scale, with a default resolution of 512×480 pixels in Mesen. Player 1 and Player 2 have been replaced with Dutch (Arnold) from Predator and Rambo, respectively. All eight stages feature new HD backgrounds and graphics inspired by various ’80s movies, along with redesigned enemies. Title cards appear before each stage, tying everything together with a new storyline that weaves elements from these films into a single game narrative. ....................................
