I traded my Ford Bronco for a Tesla because I was spending almost $200 a week on gas. But instead of buying the most affordable Model 3, I bought a $60,000 Tesla Model 3 Performance.
Five days and 500 miles later, it's time to find out if this was actually a smart financial decision… or if I just used expensive gas as an excuse to buy a really fast car.
In this video, I'm breaking down my first 500 miles with the Frost Blue Model 3 Performance, including real-world charging costs, my 80-mile daily commute, Full Self-Driving (FSD), road trips, and what it's like owning this car as a dad with a toddler.
And the numbers surprised me.
⚡ Tesla charging cost for 500 miles: approximately $14
⛽ Estimated Bronco gas cost for the same 500 miles: approximately $106
💰 Estimated savings: $92
But does saving money on gas justify spending $60,000 on a Tesla Model 3 Performance? Not necessarily.
Depreciation, insurance, financing, maintenance, and long-term ownership costs all matter. And that's exactly what I'm setting out to discover.
This is the beginning of a real-world experiment to see whether my Frost Blue Model 3 Performance can actually make financial sense — without ignoring the fact that I also wanted a ridiculously fun car to drive.
Subscribe to follow the journey as I track the costs, test the car, and find out whether trading the Bronco for a Tesla was the right move.
