In this video I show you how to rig ballyhoo for trolling. This is how we do it in Bermuda on Reel Attitude. We start off with about 3 feet of wire. We do a haywire twist on one end the wire and break it off cleanly. This is the side of the wire that gets hooked to to swivel on your rod. The other end of the wire goes through your lure head and, in this case, through a trolling squid lure. We trim the squid lures so that the ballyhoo can still be seen under the skirt. Then the wire goes through the eye of the hook and finished with another haywire twist. This time the tag end is not broken off cleanly, but is left with about a half inch tag end that is left that goes through the mouth of the ballyhoo, so it needs to point straight up directly opposite of the hook point, hook point down, pin up.
After you have done that, then you are ready to clean your ballyhoo. You squeeze the guts out of the anal cavity of the ballyhoo, making sure to get the air bladder out of the fish. Next, you squeeze the meat of the ballyhoo away from the spine, this makes for a much more flexible and longer lasting ballyhoo. Also, bend the ballyhoo around little bit, increasing its flexibility.
Now, you are ready for attaching the ballyhoo to the lure. First you measure the hook and pin next to the ballyhoo so that you can see where the hook will come out of the ballyhoo. You can visually mark the spot, or make a pin hole with a knife or the end of the hook to mark the spot. Next, you put the hook under the gill plate of the ballyhoo and work the hook and ballyhoo together until the hook is at the point where you marked it. Bring the hook out and then move it into place until the pin is lined up where it should be so that you can push the pin through the lower lip and out through the upper lip. Then use and elastic band to keep the wire and pin in place, by looping the elastic band around and around the head right behind the pin, once tight, put the elastic band opening over the pin, to keep everything in place. Next, gently break the lower bill off, from top to bottom, then open the spot where the hook is coming outa little more with your knife tip. Making the hole bigger allows the hook to move more freely.
Hope this video helps you.
Until next time…
