The first time I saw Alysa Liu skate, I wasn't thinking about her jumps or her scores. I just thought "wow, she's actually having fun out there." And that stuck with me, because you don't see that a lot in this sport. Figure skating is brutal. It's built on pressure and perfection, and most skaters look like they're surviving their program, not enjoying it. Turns out that joy took a while to get to. Alysa Liu became the youngest U.S. women's champion ever at 13. At 14 she landed a jump basically nobody else could do. At 16, she quit. This isn't a normal comeback story. It's more about what happens when someone gets a couple years to just... step back. Heal a little. Figure out who they are outside of the thing they're good at. For Alysa that meant a ski trip, hiking to Everest base camp, going to UCLA, getting her driver's license, actually hanging out with her siblings and friends. Nothing dramatic. Just life. When she came back, she wasn't trying to be 13-year-old Alysa again. She'd had time to figure out who she actually wanted to be, and that version of her turned out to be happier, freer, and honestly better at skating than before. That's kind of the whole point of this video. The idea that walking away from something — even something you're great at, even something everyone expects from you — might be exactly what lets you come back to it and actually enjoy it 🌸💋
