Sweetwater Crossing, Wyoming Territory, January of eighteen eighty seven. Thirty one degrees below zero, the stage road closed, and a woman named Clara Boyd waiting out the storm at a road ranch with twelve head of horses in the barn.
Then the door came open with the wind behind it, and the man who vanished the night before their wedding walked in out of the snow — carrying a sleeping little girl who was not hers.
Six years. No letter. No note. He didn’t even take the horse he’d been breaking. She buried her father without being able to tell him whether Tom Reese was alive or dead, and she built a horse business out of eleven head and a ledger, and every winter morning of those six years she reached into a cradle he never finished to get her kindling.
He had a reason. It’s a good one. It doesn’t make the six years smaller.
This is a long one, friends, and it earns its length. There’s a blizzard, a forged note for fourteen hundred dollars, a sixty mile ride on an ice road at two in the morning, a doctor’s ledger laid open on a kitchen table in front of nine witnesses — and a five year old girl who asks the same four words every single day until the morning she stops asking them.
Settle in. Get the lamp down low. This one’s best listened to all the way through.
