Pavarotti Sang With James Brown — Nobody Expected Opera and Soul to Sound Like THIS May 2002. Modena, Italy. Four days after his father, Fernando, died, and seventeen days after a painful cancellation at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Luciano Pavarotti walked onto the stage of his own charity concert for Angolan refugees. His guest was James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, the shoeshine boy from Augusta who had once said he liked opera “because it’s perfection.” Their song was Brown’s 1966 ballad It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World, and it had no part for a tenor. What Pavarotti did with that song, and what he asked for afterwards in his father’s name, ended up on a ferry on the Zambezi River.
