For forty years I haven't bought a single bottle of shampoo, and my hair is still clean, soft and thick. In a poor little wooden house in post-war Japan, my mother kept all of our hair shiny with things from the kitchen: the cloudy water left over from washing the rice. In America so many bathroom shelves are crowded with bottles, one for volume, one for shine, one for dandruff, and a conditioner to fix what the shampoo just did. There is a gentler way, and it costs almost nothing. In this video I'm Grandma Haruko, and I'll walk you through the old Japanese rice-water rinse (togi-jiru) step by step, plus the 20 little hair habits that go with it: the Edo-era seaweed wash, the boxwood comb and its hundred slow strokes, a starch "dry shampoo" from the kitchen cupboard, the free Japanese head spa, one drop of camellia (tsubaki) oil, the green tea rinse, why you should wash less often, and the one mistake almost everyone makes, even people who already try the natural way. Pick just three this week: save your rice water, give your hair a hundred slow strokes tonight, and go one day longer between washes. Then come back and tell me how it went. And tell me: what did YOUR mother or grandmother put on her hair?
