Solo Cross Country | Cumbernauld to Fife | VFR Zone Transit of Edinburgh Airspace Join me for a solo cross country flight from Cumbernauld Aerodrome in North Lanarkshire to Fife Aerodrome at Glenrothes, flown during my PPL training in a Piper PA-28 Warrior 161. The highlight of this flight is a VFR zone transit through Edinburgh's controlled airspace, routing via the reporting points Polmont, Bridges and Kelty, with another spectacular view of the Forth bridges along the way. Both Cumbernauld and Fife are uncontrolled aerodromes, with a radio operator working the frequency on the day. In this video I talk through the full flight, from the short field departure off runway 25 at Cumbernauld to a standard overhead join and noise abatement approach into runway 24 at Fife. Along the way I cover the radio work for the zone transit, real unedited ATC audio from the day, navigation techniques including reading from map to ground, altimeter settings and the difference between QNH and QFE, traffic awareness and go-around decision making, and a few honest lessons learned as a student pilot.
