American farming just crossed a line it hadn't seen since before the Civil War: fewer than 2 million farms left, and more than 141,000 of them gone in only five years. Most were small. Most got swallowed into bigger operations. But on some of that land, the buyer who keeps showing up doesn't drive a truck. He comes down the road in a horse and buggy.
This is the story of how the Amish became the ones still making America's small farms pay, long after almost everyone else gave up. We get into the USDA numbers behind the collapse of the family dairy, why North Dakota lost nearly everything, how the Amish actually finance a farm (it isn't cash, and it isn't a normal mortgage), and why the county that made them famous, Lancaster, is now the one place their own children can't afford to start. Then we follow the migration into upstate New York, Missouri, and Kentucky, and the settlement boom pushing Amish America toward 421,000 people across 33 states.
