Filippo Azzaiolo’s villotta “Sentomi la Formicula” is a delightful example of how, in 16th-century secular music, the animal world often serves as a source of carnivalesque metaphors to convey a certain spicy humour. In this song, an alarmed young girl tells her mother that she feels a “formica” tickling her in various parts of her body—first her leg, then her thigh, then her belly. Her experienced mother, however, is well acquainted with that particular kind of “tickle,” and wisely—though somewhat brusquely—reassures her daughter: if you feel it, just let it go where it needs to go!
