Welcome to MO Academy! 🎓💻
In Video 47 of our TypeScript Complete Course, we are learning Generic Functions in TypeScript.
In the previous lesson, we introduced Generics and learned how they help us write reusable, flexible, and type-safe code. Now, we will take the next step and learn how to create our own generic functions with simple examples.
Normally, when we create a function, we might specify a particular data type. But what if we want the same function to work with strings, numbers, or other types without writing a separate function for each one?
This is where Generic Functions become useful! 🚀
🧩 What Are Generic Functions?
A generic function is a function that uses a generic type parameter, allowing it to work with different data types while preserving type information.
1️⃣ Creating Generic Functions
Learn the basic syntax of generic functions and understand where to place the type parameter.
2️⃣ Understanding the T Type Parameter
Understand how T acts as a placeholder for a type that can be determined when the function is called.
3️⃣ Generic Functions with Different Data Types
Learn how one function can work with strings, numbers, and Boolean values.
🌐 Real-World Uses of Generic Functions
Generic functions are useful when building:
🔹 Reusable utility functions
🔹 Data-processing functions
🔹 API helper functions
🔹 Array and collection utilities
🔹 Reusable application logic
🔹 Frontend applications
🔹 Backend services
🔹 TypeScript libraries
They are especially helpful when the same operation needs to work with different types of data.
💻 Generics in Modern Development
Understanding generic functions provides a foundation for working with:
TypeScript
React and reusable components
Next.js applications
Node.js applications
API response utilities
Reusable libraries and tools
Generics also help you understand the type definitions used by many TypeScript libraries.
💡 Practice Challenge
Try creating a generic function named returnValue.
Your function should:
1. Accept a value of a generic type.
2. Return that same value.
3. Work with a string, a number, and a Boolean.
4. Use both explicit type arguments and type inference.
🚀 What Comes Next?
We are continuing our Generics section.
In the upcoming lessons, we will explore:
🧩 Generic Interfaces
🏗️ Generic Classes
🔒 Constraints in Generics
Each lesson will build on the previous one and help you understand how generics are used in practical TypeScript development.
