Your full new State Pension is £12,547.60 this year. The personal allowance — the amount you can have before income tax — is £12,570. That's a gap of just £22.40. Which is why HMRC letters and tax code changes are now landing on the doormats of pensioners who never expected to pay income tax again. Add a small works pension, or simply interest on your savings, and you're in the tax system.
Many of you ask where you can find all of this information in one place. I've put everything together in The UK Pensioner Survival Playbook 2026/27 — covering the State Pension, Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance, Council Tax help, care costs, tax, important forms, deadlines, and more in plain English.

But there is one ordinary high-street account where HMRC cannot touch a penny of what your money earns — not the interest, not the growth, not now and not in ten years. In this video I explain exactly what it is, why your savings may be sitting in completely the wrong place, and two things almost nobody has told you:
1) The government has just cut the cash ISA allowance from £20,000 to £12,000 from April 2027 — but if you're 65 or over, you are specifically exempt and keep the full £20,000. It's in the government's own ISA reform documents and it barely got reported.
2) If you've lost a husband, wife or civil partner, you may be entitled to an extra one-off ISA allowance equal to the entire value of their ISA — on top of your own £20,000. You get it even if the money was left to someone else. It has a deadline, and no bank will chase you about it.
I also cover the mistake that costs people a full year's allowance when moving money (never withdraw — always transfer), and I'm honest about who does NOT need to do anything: because of the starting rate for savings, some pensioners are already paying no tax on their interest.

📌 KEY FIGURES (2026/27)
Personal allowance: £12,570 (frozen) · Full new State Pension: £12,547.60
Personal Savings Allowance: £1,000 basic rate / £500 higher rate / £0 additional rate
ISA allowance: £20,000 (6 April – 5 April, does not roll over)
From April 2027: cash ISA capped at £12,000 for under-65s — 65+ keep the full £20,000
From April 2027: tax on savings interest outside ISAs rises to 22% / 42% / 47%
⚠️ THREE HONEST LIMITS: an ISA is NOT free from inheritance tax; ISA savings DO count for means-tested help like Pension Credit; and stocks & shares ISAs carry real investment risk — the value can fall.
🚫 Nobody legitimate will ring you offering a special ISA rate. If someone contacts you first, hang up.
