Salah is not simply a routine obligation in Islam.
It is the central pillar of faith and the most consistent act of worship connecting a believer to Allah.
In this powerful reminder, Dr. Haifaa Younis explains why prayer occupies a unique status in Islam and why neglecting it places a person’s entire spiritual life in danger.
Unlike other acts of worship, the five daily prayers were prescribed directly in the heavens during the miraculous night of Al-Isra’ wal-Mi‘raj. The Prophet ﷺ was initially commanded to perform fifty prayers each day, and after multiple returns and divine mercy, the number was reduced to five—while still carrying the reward of fifty.
This story shows something profound:
Even five daily prayers are already a massive mercy compared to what was originally required.
Dr. Haifaa Younis then highlights the final days of the Prophet ﷺ.
Despite severe illness, one of his greatest concerns remained the same question:
“Did the people pray?”
Even in his final moments, he insisted that the prayer continue and that Abu Bakr lead the believers.
This reveals a critical truth:
Salah is not a seasonal act of worship limited to Ramadan.
It is the daily proof of a Muslim’s relationship with Allah.
Many communities today react strongly if someone misses fasting in Ramadan, yet often remain silent if someone abandons prayer entirely. This reflects a dangerous shift in priorities, because salah is the foundation of the religion.
The lecture also explains that prayer contains many acts of worship within it:
• Qur’an recitation
• Dhikr and remembrance
• Tasbih and glorification
• Du‘a and supplication
• Standing before Allah
• Bowing and prostration
In other words, salah gathers the essence of worship into one act.
Dr. Haifaa Younis also offers a practical lesson:
When a believer feels overwhelmed, angry, or emotionally scattered, the solution is not always distraction—it is two rak‘ahs of prayer. Salah has the ability to stabilize the heart and reconnect a person with Allah.
The Qur’an also reminds us that humans are not the only creation worshipping Allah. Birds, angels, and other creatures constantly glorify Him. Knowing this should inspire humility in the believer and motivate them to guard their prayers.
Examples from the Qur’an show that prayer was commanded to earlier prophets as well:
Prophet Ibrahim prayed for a community that establishes prayer.
Prophet Ismail instructed his family to pray.
Prophet Musa was commanded to establish prayer for the remembrance of Allah.
Maryam was commanded to bow and prostrate in worship.
Even the companions of the Prophet ﷺ treated salah with unmatched seriousness. It is reported that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه was attacked while leading prayer, yet even in that state he responded to the call of salah.
The message of this lecture is clear and powerful:
Salah is not just another obligation—it is the anchor of faith.
When prayer is protected, the rest of the religion becomes stable.
When prayer weakens, everything else begins to collapse.
