Helloween and the Origin of European Power Metal

Helloween is arguably the first true European power metal band. Emerging from Hamburg, Germany in the mid-1980s, they completely redefined the heavy metal landscape by injecting blistering speed metal riffs with grand, soaring classical melodies and triumphant, anthemic hooks. Buckle up for a comprehensive deep-dive retrospective tracking the turbulent career of a metal institution. The entire history of the band is covered here, analyzing every music video and reviewing all 16 studio albums (so far). We'll follow their evolution from the raw, aggressive thrashy energy of Kai Hansen on Walls of Jericho, to the legendary, genre-defining masterclasses of the Michael Kiske era with Keeper of the Seven Keys Parts I & II and his successor Andi Deris. Grab a pumpkin, put on your headphones, and let's explore the origin of European power metal! NOTE: The Best Time music video got removed for arbitrary copyright reasons, but it's my favorite track on the 2021 album and worth looking up.
