Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. This set was recorded in Dec 1996 around the time of Kool FM's 5th Birthday celebrations which was held @Lazerdrome, Rye Lane Peckham. Kool FM also ran a weekly Saturday event there called "Club Kool". Our next focus is on DJ Footloose, a celebrated DJ in both the Jungle and UK Garage scenes. He was one of the first DJs to make a successfully leap from the Jungle Movement to become an established UK Garage circuit DJ playing at nights like Stush, Sun City and La Cosa Nostra. However, by the late 90s he made a switch back to playing Drum & Bass, before spearheading the UK Funky scene and previously hosted shows on BBC Radio 1Xtra.
The year of 1996 is our focus where DJ Footloose featured at many rave nights like: Jungle Fever 1996 "Midsummer Night's Fever" @Club UN, Tottenham London N17, on Friday 14th June 1996. Also, Jungle Fever Saturday 28th September 1996, Halle 101 Speyer (Germany). Not forgetting, Kool Skool '96 @The Powerhouse, Stratford London E15.
Footloose also released his first track on Kool FM's record label, K Power Records, Footloose - Gat-Hummin (K Power – KPO-001, 1996).
It's also interesting to see how Skibadee was still at a developmental stage of his career and how he was building towards his celebrated legendary status. This was before Skiba established all his MC partnerships, with the SASAS (Shabba D, Shockin' B and Skibadee) which was to become a pirate radio sensation. Skibadee's partnership with MC Det in 1998 saw their UK Hip Hop release of "Slowmo" and "New Style Avengers" (Two Times Freestyle, 1998). Then later on with Highly Blessed Recordings which was set up by MC Shabba with the help of Skibadee to bring through up and coming MCs at their roadblock events the MC Convention @The Stratford Rex. Followed by The Uncontrolabelz (The UNCZ) with Skibadee, Funsta MC, MC Harry Shotta and DJ Ruff Stuff in the 2000s which some say was the precursor for the current SASASAS (DJ Phantasy, DJ Macky Gee, MC Harry Shotta, MC Skibadee, MC Shabba D, MC Stormin (RIP).
It is fair to say MC Shockin' B was highly underrated. Apart from featuring on Kool FM's big name events, surprisingly the other rave nights weren't so keen on booking him. Scanning through the flyers you don't see his name on One Nation, Slammin' Vinyl and other well known events. Before this recording MC Shockin' B had left Weekend Rush FM 92.3 after it was sadly taken off air by the DTI due to a series of crack of dawn raids on pirate radio stations including Kool FM. Kool FM survived those tough times, whilst Weekend Rush FM disbanded. Kik FM set up in their place but couldn't the FM dial's former glory and this created an exodus of DJs and MCs who left the Hackney based pirate station to their rival and neighbour, Kool FM. MC Shockin' B, along with Funky Flirt, later joined by Shabba D and a few others crossed over to Kool FM. Ever since 1996, MC Shockin' B has remained faithful to Kool FM and has worked tirelessly with management in the newly styled "Kool London" which saw Kool FM switch from the pirate radio station to a legalised internet station, streaming through their website: www.koollondon.com.
Skibadee was certainly considered as one of the best MCs if not the best MC after the sudden death of the legendary Stevie Hyper D (RIP). Skibadee would become a superstar and his influence on MCing across Jungle and UK Garage was immense. Interestingly with the new generation of Grime MCs and DNB MCs they rarely give credit to Skibadee which is rather unjust considering he was a pioneer of MCing in the UK. Skibadee salt passed away but left an immense legacy which we continue to celebrate.
