Why did it suck to be the chief eunuch in the Ottoman Empire? You held the third highest rank in a world empire with direct access to the sultan, but your life was an inescapable gilded cage designed to leave no heirs.
Stolen from the Ethiopian highlands as a child and sold through Cairo, you survived to enter Topkapi Palace as an enslaved cleaner carrying a brass key. Through discipline and the patronage of the Valide Sultan, you rose to command the imperial harem, outlast grand viziers, and manage the vast pilgrimage revenues of Mecca and Medina. When court factions shifted, you were stripped of office and sent into lifelong Cairo exile with a state pension. You held the wealth of an empire, but the state ensured you could never build a family or return home.
You are a composite of several real men who held the office of Kizlar Aga; every palace rule, wage register, and named figure is real. Individual scenes reflect the documented lives of administrators like Mehmed Aga, Yusuf Agha, and El Hajj Beshir Agha.

MYTHS WE LEFT OUT ON PURPOSE
No pleasure palace: archival registers show the harem ran as a strictly managed domestic household.
No battlefield command: chief eunuchs exercised immense state power but never led troops in war.
No mass sack drownings: sensational European tales lack confirmation in contemporary Ottoman registers.
No public dismissal orders: decrees deposing chief eunuchs were deliberately omitted from central state registers.
